I often describe what I do as Therapeutic Coaching. What does that mean?
I often find that people take some time before they finally seek help for their eating issues, whether it is disordered eating, or negative thoughts related to their bodies, or they have a recognised / diagnosed eating disorder such as binge eating disorder or Bulimia. – whatever it might be.
There are often preconceptions around “talking therapy”, counselling, psychotherapy, CBT, etc too. That’s why after taking that vital first step- recognising that you have something going on which has become unmanageable for you, and looking for professional help- you do your homework and speak to a few people who work in this space before you start working with someone so you can feel safe and comfortable with your chosen professional. Even if we have had similar training, we all work differently and we all have different personalities! The relationship between the client and the therapist is crucial. I have received plenty of training in coaching and counselling as well as specifically in relation to eating issues (not only eating disorders; I am a hypnotherapist as well as a Registered Nurse. Phew. That’s a lot of stuff……impressed? It won’t matter a jot if you don’t feel a connection with me.
It can also seem confusing when someone offers a number of different approaches. So… how do I work?
I describe myself as a Therapeutic Coach.
What does that mean?
A Therapeutic Coach is someone who combines elements of coaching and counselling therapy to support personal growth, healing / recovery, and goal achievement.
Coaching is something that focuses more on the now and the future. It helps you to define and set goals that are manageable and support recovery and change. It can also be used to increase confidence and self- esteem, explores blocks to change (some of which might be unconscious), limiting beliefs, and past experiences that might be getting in the way of your making any progress out of the place you are in.
As a qualified counsellor, coach and therapist, I am well- equipped to help you if you are stuck in patterns that counselling or coaching alone has not helped. You might have tried coaching before but you need more emotional support than standard coaching offers. You might have tried counselling but needed more structured guidance and onwards movement. It’s great for people who are transitioning through major life changes too.
If you are struggling because you are constantly thinking about food, have a negative approach to your body, you are grappling with binge eating…. Whatever it is, if you are suffering, then reach out for help. That is the first step and often the hardest one!
